EPFO ₹15,000 Incentive: Who Is Eligible, and How to Claim It
If you have just started your first job, you may have heard that the government will pay you up to ₹15,000 through EPFO. This is real, but there are conditions. This guide covers who qualifies, who doesn’t, and what to do so your claim isn’t rejected.
What is the ₹15,000 scheme?
The ₹15,000 benefit is Part A of the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme, now officially called the PM Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PM-VBRY). It took effect on 1 August 2025 and has two parts: Part A for youth entering the workforce for the first time, and Part B for employers who create and sustain jobs.
The scheme has an outlay of ₹99,446 crore and aims to incentivise more than 3.5 crore jobs over two years. Part A gives first-time employees one month’s EPF wage, up to ₹15,000, paid in two instalments.
Eligibility rules for employees (Part A)
1. You must be a first-time EPF member
You must not have been a contributing member of the Employees’ Provident Fund, either with EPFO or an exempted trust, before 1 August 2025. If you had a PF account at an earlier job, even briefly, you are not a “first-timer” under this scheme.
2. Your joining date must fall in the scheme window
Your date of joining must be between 1 August 2025 and 31 July 2027, both dates inclusive. A job you start any time in this two-year window can qualify.
3. Your first contribution must be received on time
Your contribution must reach EPFO or the exempted trust for the first time for the wage month of August 2025 or later. This means your employer must be EPFO-registered and must deposit your PF regularly. If your employer doesn’t deposit your contributions, you won’t get the incentive.
4. Your salary must be within the limit
Employees with salaries up to ₹1 lakh per month are eligible.
5. Your UAN and bank details must be correct
One guide on the scheme says your bank details on the EPFO portal must be correct and your UAN must be KYC-verified. Payments are made by Direct Benefit Transfer through the Aadhaar Bridge Payment System (ABPS), so your bank account needs to be Aadhaar-seeded.
How and when you get the money
The two instalments are tied to how long you stay employed:
- The first instalment is payable after 6 months of service.
- The second is payable after 12 months of service and after you complete a financial literacy programme.
- A portion of the incentive is kept in a savings instrument or deposit account for a fixed period, so not all of it may reach your account at once.
If you quit or change jobs before six months, you may lose the first instalment. Check the official guidelines on the PM-VBRY portal for the exact treatment.
How much will you actually get?
The incentive is one month’s EPF wage, capped at ₹15,000. If your monthly EPF wage is ₹12,000, you would get about ₹12,000, not ₹15,000. Only those with an EPF wage of ₹15,000 or more reach the maximum. The official SOP for calculating the incentive is on the scheme portal.
Do employers have conditions too?
Yes, and they matter to you indirectly. Part B rewards employers for creating new jobs:
- EPFO-registered establishments must hire at least two additional employees (if they have fewer than 50 staff) or at least five additional employees (if they have 50 or more), sustained for at least six months.
- Employers receive up to ₹3,000 per month per additional employee for two years.
- In manufacturing, incentives extend to the third and fourth years.
These rules decide the employer’s benefit. Your Part A eligibility depends on your own status as a first-time member.
Step-by-step checklist to claim your incentive
- Get a UAN the right way. From 1 August 2025, new UANs are generated and activated through the UMANG app using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication. You’ll need an Aadhaar-linked mobile number and the UIDAI face-scan app on your phone.
- Complete KYC. Link your Aadhaar, bank account and PAN on the EPFO Member Portal, and check that your name and date of birth match your Aadhaar exactly.
- Seed your bank account with Aadhaar so ABPS payment can work.
- Check your passbook. Make sure your employer deposits PF every month, starting from your first wage month.
- Complete the financial literacy programme when EPFO asks you to, since the second instalment depends on it.
- Track updates on the official portal
Common reasons a claim may fail
- You had a PF or UAN contribution before 1 August 2025, even from a short earlier job.
- Your employer is not EPFO-registered, or doesn’t deposit contributions.
- Your UAN is not activated or KYC-verified.
- Your bank account is not Aadhaar-seeded.
- Your name, date of birth or Aadhaar details don’t match across records.
- You left the job before completing the required service period.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to apply separately?
Your employer files the required returns, and EPFO identifies eligible employees from those records. Don’t rely on this alone. Keep your UAN, KYC and bank details in order, and check the official portal for any claim steps.
I had a UAN but never worked or contributed. Am I eligible?
The test is whether you were a contributing member before 1 August 2025. A UAN with no contributions is different from a contributing account, but confirm this with EPFO or your employer because it is a common edge case.
Is the ₹15,000 given to everyone who joined after August 2025?
No. It is only for first-time EPF members, and the amount is capped at one month’s EPF wage.
Does the scheme end?
The window covers jobs starting up to 31 July 2027. Check official notifications for any changes.
Final word
The rules come down to four things: a first-ever EPF contribution, a joining date between August 2025 and July 2027, a salary up to ₹1 lakh, and verified UAN and bank details. Get your UAN and KYC sorted in your first month, confirm your employer is depositing PF, and stay in the job past the six-month mark.
This post is for general information. Rules can be updated, so verify the latest details on the official PM-VBRY portal or with EPFO before acting.
