Important Update: Revision in E-Way Bill and Consolidated E-Way Bill Numbering Formats (Effective Jan 1, 2027)

Date: November 4, 2026

Published by: Team GSTN

With the continuous growth in trade and commerce across India, the volume of E-Way Bills being generated has experienced a substantial surge. To ensure that the system does not run out of capacity and to accommodate future growth, the Goods and Services Network (GSTN) has announced important revisions to the E-Way Bill and Consolidated E-Way Bill numbering formats, coming into effect from 1st January 2027.

What is Changing?

To prevent the existing numbering capacity from being exhausted, the digit length for both documents is being expanded:

Document Type Existing Format Proposed Format (w.e.f. Jan 1, 2027)
E-Way Bill Number 12 digits 14 digits
Consolidated E-Way Bill Number 10 digits 11 digits

Note: All data in this table is sourced directly from the official GSTN notification dated November 4, 2026.

Action Required for Stakeholders

All stakeholders—including taxpayers, GSPs (GST Suvidha Providers), ERP/software vendors, and API integrators—must take immediate note of these changes.

To avoid any operational disruption come January, technical teams need to:

  • Modify internal applications, APIs, and database schemas.

  • Update validation rules to seamlessly accept the new 14-digit E-Way Bill numbers and 11-digit Consolidated E-Way Bill numbers.

Testing and Sandbox Environment

To help developers and businesses test their integrations, GSTN will release these changes in the Sandbox environment shortly. Relevant technical details and documentation will be published on the official E-Way Bill Portal.

Stakeholders are strongly advised to ensure system readiness well before 1 January 2027 to guarantee smooth, uninterrupted logistics and compliance operations.
